The entrance to Elstar Restaurant at the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection in Vienna, Austria

Tucked within the elegant grounds of the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection lies a dining experience that feels less like a simple hotel restaurant and more like a quiet, immersive extension of Vienna itself. Elstar Restaurant is not only a place to eat, it is a place where history, atmosphere, and thoughtful cuisine converge in a way that feels both grounded and refined.

During my stay in Vienna, I found myself returning to Elstar at different moments of the day: early mornings, relaxed afternoons, and softly lit evenings. Each visit revealed a slightly different side of the space, and together, these moments created a layered experience that stayed with me long after I left.

Elstar Restaurant at a glance
🏨 Where it is · Inside the Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection — a Marriott boutique hotel at Ungargasse 60 in Vienna’s 3rd district (Landstraße), close to Belvedere Palace.
🏛️ The setting · A heritage building that began in the 18th century as Palais Harrach, designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt (architect of the Belvedere). It became the k. u. k. Militär-Reitlehrer-Institut (military riding school) from 1850 to 1918, was later Vienna’s largest cinema, and reopened as a hotel in 1988. Renovated by Goddard Littlefair and rebranded under the Autograph Collection name in May 2024.
🍎 The name · Elstar takes its name from an apple variety planted in the hotel’s 2,000 m² private garden — Vienna’s largest inner-city private garden — as a tribute to the orchard that once supplied Emperor Franz Joseph I’s imperial court with fresh fruit.
🌳 The garden · Home to “The Old Lady,” a 150-year-old plane tree and one of Vienna’s oldest.
👨‍🍳 Executive Chef · Max Kischnick, leading a 140-seat restaurant with modern Viennese cuisine and Eastern European accents.
Best moments · Breakfast buffet, mid-afternoon coffee with the Apfelstrudel Elstar Style, and dinner in a softly lit dining room.

A Setting Rooted in History

Elstar Restaurant is deeply anchored in the historical identity of its surroundings, and this is something you begin to appreciate even before your first bite. The site’s origins reach back further than the riding school itself – the original 18th-century buildings were part of Palais Harrach, designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, the same architect responsible for the Belvedere Palace just a few minutes’ walk away. The k. u. k. Militär-Reitlehrer-Institut (the Imperial and Royal Military Riding Instructors’ Institute) moved into the buildings in 1850 under Emperor Franz Joseph I and operated until the fall of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918. While the space has been reimagined, traces of that long history remain visible, most notably in the preserved stone pillars that still carry subtle marks of time and use. These architectural elements are not treated as relics, but rather as integral features that give the space depth and character.

The building’s life since 1918 reads like a quiet history of 20th-century Vienna in miniature. After the riding school closed, the riding hall served as a warehouse, then was converted in the 1930s into one of Vienna’s largest cinemas. War damage during the Second World War left parts of the structure ruined, though the portico and historic staircases survived. The building first opened as a hotel in 1988, and after extensive renovation by London-based design studio Goddard Littlefair, reopened in May 2024 as Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection – the first Autograph Collection property in Austria. The result is a building that has worn many identities, each layered visibly into the spaces you now move through.

The bar end of the restaurant, with original stone columns from the 18th-century Palais Harrach (later the military riding school) preserved as structural anchors. The cascading copper-chain chandelier overhead is a Goddard Littlefair signature — a contemporary echo of the equestrian theme woven throughout.

Beyond the walls of the restaurant lies one of Vienna’s most quietly remarkable details: a 2,000 m² private garden – one of the largest inner-city private gardens in Vienna – planted on the grounds where Emperor Franz Joseph I’s imperial orchard once supplied the court with fresh fruit. At its heart stands “The Old Lady”, a 150-year-old plane tree that is among the oldest in the city, anchoring the garden in living continuity with the imperial era. This is not simply a decorative note; it is part of the identity of Elstar. The restaurant takes its name from the Elstar apple, planted in the modern garden as a tribute to that imperial orchard, with the apple chosen for its place in contemporary Austrian and European cultivation. This connection creates a meaningful continuity between past and present, where the legacy of imperial Vienna subtly informs the dining experience without overwhelming it.

Interior Décor: Where Heritage Meets Modern Elegance

The interior of Elstar Restaurant reflects a careful balance between historical preservation and contemporary design. Rather than leaning too heavily into tradition or modernity, the space achieves a quiet harmony between the two. The palette is composed of soft, neutral tones that create an immediate sense of calm, while the lighting has been thoughtfully designed to adapt to the time of day. In the morning, natural light fills the room, highlighting the clean lines of the furniture and the openness of the layout. As the day progresses, the atmosphere gradually shifts, and by evening, the space takes on a more intimate quality, with warm lighting that enhances the textures and materials throughout the room.

The preserved pillars act as subtle focal points, grounding the space in its history without interrupting the flow of the design. Seating is comfortable yet refined, encouraging guests to linger rather than rush. There is an understated elegance here, nothing feels excessive or overly styled. Instead, the décor allows the experience itself to take centre stage, creating an environment that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

Morning Magic: Breakfast at Elstar

Mornings at Elstar are defined by a sense of ease and quiet refinement. The breakfast offering is presented as a generous buffet, featuring a wide selection of both warm and cold dishes that cater to a variety of preferences without feeling overwhelming. Fresh fruits, juices, and yogurts are displayed alongside an assortment of pastries and breads, each prepared with care and attention to quality. The savoury options include eggs, cheeses, and other classic breakfast items, allowing guests to create a meal that feels both nourishing and indulgent. The coffee selection is equally thoughtful, providing the perfect start to the day in a city known for its café culture.

What makes the experience particularly memorable is not just the variety, but the atmosphere in which it is enjoyed. The restaurant in the early hours feels calm and unhurried, offering a moment of pause before stepping out into the rhythm of Vienna. It is the kind of breakfast that invites you to sit a little longer, to enjoy another cup of coffee, and to ease into the day at your own pace.

Afternoon Pause: Coffee and Dessert in Vienna

At some point during the day, returning to Elstar for coffee and dessert feels almost inevitable. There is something about the space that lends itself perfectly to these quieter, more reflective moments. During our visit, we opted for flat whites and an Americano, each prepared with the same level of care that defines the rest of the menu. Accompanying our coffee was the Apfelstrudel Elstar Style, a refined interpretation of one of Vienna’s most iconic desserts.

This version of the classic apple strudel features poached and caramelized apples, layered with delicate notes of vanilla and paired with a light sorbet. The result is a dessert that feels both familiar and elevated, respecting tradition while offering a more contemporary presentation. It is not overly heavy, which makes it particularly enjoyable in the afternoon, when you are seeking something indulgent yet balanced.

The Apfelstrudel Elstar Style — flaky pastry around poached and caramelised apples, dusted with powdered sugar and finished with a fresh physalis. The pitcher alongside holds Vanillesoße — vanilla custard sauce, the classic Viennese partner to a strudel, poured generously over each slice.

Sitting in the softly lit space, with coffee in hand and dessert in front of you, it becomes clear that these smaller moments are often the most memorable. Elstar provides the perfect setting for that pause, an opportunity to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.

Evening Elegance: Dinner at Elstar

As evening approaches, Elstar transitions into a more intimate dining environment, with lighting and ambiance shifting to create a sense of warmth and relaxation. Under Executive Chef Max Kischnick, the kitchen takes a contemporary approach to imperial Viennese cuisine, blending regional flavours with subtle Eastern European accents – a direction that reads through every dish without ever announcing itself loudly. Dinner here feels unforced and comfortable, while still maintaining a level of refinement that reflects the restaurant’s overall identity. We began with the roasted tomato cream soup, which was rich and well-balanced, offering a comforting start to the meal. This was served with sourdough bread, cheddar, and sour cream that mingle into the broth as you eat. The bread, in particular, stood out for its freshness and flavour, demonstrating how even the simplest elements of a meal can leave a lasting impression when executed well.

The roasted tomato cream soup, arrived warming and orange-toned with chunks of charred sourdough and cheese already mingling into the broth. A heartier interpretation than a smooth bisque — closer in spirit to a Tuscan pappa al pomodoro than a classic cream soup.

The Caesar salad, enhanced with grilled chicken, was a classic prepared with attention to detail, combining crisp textures with a well-rounded dressing and quality ingredients. For a heartier option, the Farrier’s Beef Brioche Burger offered a more indulgent experience, featuring dry-aged beef, cheddar, and a rich burger sauce, accompanied by a green leafy salad. It was a dish that balanced comfort and quality, making it both satisfying and memorable.

Dinner at Elstar is not about elaborate presentation or overly complex dishes. Instead, it focuses on delivering well-prepared, thoughtfully composed meals in an environment that encourages you to relax and enjoy the experience.

The Experience: More Than Just a Meal

What sets Elstar apart is the continuity it offers throughout the day. It is rare to find a place that can seamlessly accommodate breakfast, a casual coffee break, and a full dinner, all while maintaining a consistent sense of identity. Each moment feels thoughtfully connected, allowing you to experience the space in different ways without ever losing its core character. Because it is located within the hotel, it becomes a natural extension of your stay. You begin to recognize the space, the rhythm, and even the subtle shifts in atmosphere as the day progresses. This familiarity adds a layer of comfort that enhances the overall travel experience, making each return feel both intentional and effortless.

Equally memorable is the service, which plays a quiet yet essential role in shaping the experience. From morning to evening, the team is warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, striking a balance between professionalism and ease. There is a natural attentiveness in the way service is delivered – never intrusive, yet always present when needed. Whether it is a coffee served with care, a thoughtful recommendation, or simply the consistency of being recognized throughout the day, the service contributes to a sense of continuity that elevates the entire experience.

Elstar is not defined by a single standout moment, but rather by the accumulation of smaller, well-executed ones. It is a place you return to not out of convenience, but because it quietly earns that place in your routine.
