Hello, fellow explorers and food lovers! 🌟 It’s Bubbly, here to share my delightful experience at Tavern on the Hill in Ottawa. Nestled in one of the most picturesque spots in the city, this lively outdoor eatery is known for its stunning views, relaxed vibe, and mouth-watering food. Let’s dive into what makes this place a must-visit, especially during the warmer months!
A Bit of History
Tavern on the Hill is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s a beloved local hangout with a history that ties it closely to Ottawa’s vibrant community spirit. Established in 2017, this seasonal outdoor bar and grill quickly became a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. Its location in Major’s Hill Park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Parliament Buildings, the Ottawa River, and nearby landmarks, including the National Gallery of Canada. From the tavern, you can even catch a glimpse of the museum’s stunning architecture, adding to the scenic charm of the dining experience.
Recently, Tavern on the Hill underwent renovations and reopened in the summer of 2023, bringing fresh updates while retaining its signature charm. The renovation has enhanced the overall dining experience, making it even more inviting for guests.
Culinary Delights
During my visit, I had the pleasure of trying several of their popular dishes:
- Hot Dog – Canadian | Le Canadien: This was hands down my favorite! The hot dog came loaded with shredded lettuce, crispy bacon, onion, and their signature Tavern sauce. The combination of flavors was simply amazing, with the bacon adding a delightful crunch and the Tavern sauce giving it a unique and savory twist.

Tacos – Marinated Tuna | Thon Mariné: These tacos were another highlight. The marinated tuna was perfectly seasoned, and the kimchi slaw, pickled jalapeños, cilantro, and radish provided a fresh, tangy kick that made each bite a burst of flavor.

Tacos – Chicken | Poulet: Equally delicious, the chicken tacos were topped with pico de gallo, guacamole, lime crema, cilantro, and radish. The blend of ingredients was well-balanced, and the lime crema added a zesty finish that complemented the savory chicken.

Salad – Ginger Chicken | Poulet au Gingembre: While the hot dog and tacos were hits, the salad was a bit of a letdown for me. The ginger vinaigrette was flavorful, but overall, the salad lacked the excitement that the other dishes had. It just didn’t quite hit the mark in the same way.

To complement our meal, we enjoyed a refreshing Peroni beer and a delicious sangria from the tavern’s full-service bar. The drinks were the perfect accompaniment to the flavorful dishes and added to the overall laid-back and enjoyable atmosphere.

The Dining Experience
Tavern on the Hill operates on a self-serve model, where you place your order at the counter and then find a seat. While the food is brought to your table when ready, I found this aspect a bit less appealing, especially during busy times when finding a seat can be a challenge. However, the view and the quality of the food certainly made up for it.
