Hello fellow winter adventurers!❄️ If there’s one festival that turns winter into a wonderland, it’s Winterlude in Ottawa! This annual celebration transforms Canada’s capital into a snowy playground of ice sculptures, outdoor adventures, and festive fun. I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing Winterlude this year and, trust me, it was pure magic! From gliding down the Rideau Canal to admiring the most intricate ice sculptures on Sparks Street, this festival was the perfect way to embrace the season.
What is Winterlude?
Held annually in February, Winterlude is one of Canada’s most beloved winter festivals, celebrating all things snowy, icy, and fun! First launched in 1979, it has grown into a must-visit event, attracting visitors from around the world. The festival offers a mix of outdoor adventure, art, music, food, and cultural experiences, all set against the stunning backdrop of Ottawa in winter.

💡 Best part? Winterlude is FREE! That’s right – most of the events and activities are open to the public at no cost, making it an amazing winter getaway.
The Best Things to Do at Winterlude
⛸️ 1. Skate on the Rideau Canal – The World’s Largest Skating Rink
Imagine gliding along 7.8 km (4.8 miles) of frozen waterway, surrounded by snow-covered trees and historic landmarks – that’s exactly what you get when you skate on the Rideau Canal Skateway! As the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink, this is the signature Winterlude experience.

The atmosphere was electric! Families, couples, and solo skaters all came together to enjoy the crisp air and the thrill of skating. Whether you’re an experienced skater or wobbling on the ice for the first time, the pure joy of the Rideau Canal is unmatched.
❄️ 2. Marvel at the Ice Sculptures on Sparks Street
If you think ice is just for keeping drinks cold, think again! The ice sculptures at Winterlude are jaw-dropping works of art. Crafted by talented ice carvers from around the world, these sculptures turn Sparks Street into an open-air ice gallery.

Walking through the glowing sculptures at night was mesmerizing. The way the lights danced off the ice made the entire street look like a scene from a winter fairy tale. Every sculpture was more intricate than the last, from mythical creatures to Canadian landmarks.

Best Photo Spot: The Confederation Square, it looks especially stunning when lit up at night!

🎶 3. Enjoy Live Music & Cultural Events
Winterlude isn’t just about ice – it’s also about music, dance, and cultural celebrations! Throughout the festival, you can catch live performances, Indigenous storytelling, and interactive workshops. Watching the outdoor concerts while bundled up in a cozy coat, sipping on hot cocoa, and feeling the energy of the crowd was incredible. It’s amazing how music brings warmth even in the coldest weather! 🎶☕
🍽️ 4. Indulge in Ottawa’s Winter Comfort Food Scene
After all that outdoor adventure, you’ll need to warm up! Ottawa’s food scene during Winterlude is all about cozy, comforting flavors. Some must-try treats include:
🥞 Maple Taffy on Snow – A Canadian winter classic!
🍫 Hot Chocolate from Cacao 70 – Rich, decadent, and perfect after skating.
🥘 French Canadian Tourtière – A savory meat pie you have to try!
🍺 Local Winter Ales – Ottawa has some incredible craft breweries worth visiting.
🍁 Beavertail – Ottawa’s famous deep-fried pastry, at one of the food stalls along the canal. The cinnamon sugar Beavertail was my favorite! 🤤
