Bonjour, fellow adventurers! During my Parisian journey, I discovered a lush, historical gem in the heart of the city: the Tuileries Gardens. Nestled between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde, these gardens are not only a peaceful retreat but a living piece of Parisian history. Whether you’re looking to relax, explore art, or take a step back in time, the Tuileries offer it all.
A Touch of History
The Tuileries Gardens were originally designed in 1564 for Queen Catherine de’ Medici, who sought to create a garden for her royal palace. By the 17th century, the famed landscape architect André Le Nôtre, designer of Versailles, transformed the gardens into the grand formal space you see today. It became a public park after the French Revolution, and since then, generations of Parisians and visitors have strolled through its elegant pathways.
One of the most striking historical landmarks is the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, which stands at the eastern end near the Louvre. Built by Napoleon in 1808, it commemorates his military victories and serves as a smaller counterpart to the larger Arc de Triomphe at the other end of the Champs-Élysées. It’s a beautiful entrance to the Jardin du Carrousel, a smaller garden leading directly into the main Tuileries.

Highlights of the Gardens
Strolling down the central Grande Allée, you’ll be surrounded by perfectly manicured trees and grand sculptures. This grand axis leads straight to Place de la Concorde on one end and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel on the other, giving you stunning views of Paris. The Grand Couvert area, with its towering chestnut trees, is a shady, peaceful corner of the park where you can relax and take in the atmosphere.
One of my favorite spots is the Octagonal Basin, where kids sail little boats and you can simply sit and enjoy the day.
