If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a blend of nature, art, and history, this is the perfect spot. So, lace up your walking shoes, and let’s explore this captivating park together!
A Journey Through History and Art
Located just ten miles north of Ketchikan, Totem Bight State Historical Park is an 11-acre gem that beautifully combines the rich cultural heritage of Alaska’s Native peoples with the stunning natural beauty of the region. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the lush rainforest setting and the rocky coastline along the Tongass Narrows, providing a breathtaking backdrop for the park’s impressive totem poles.

The Clan House: A Central Attraction
One of the highlights of the park is the colorful Clan House. This stunning structure, with its intricate carvings and vibrant artwork, offers a fascinating glimpse into the living quarters that would have been shared by 30 to 50 family members of the same lineage, led by a house chief. Inside, the large room with a central fireplace surrounded by a planked platform felt like stepping back in time. It was amazing to see how the space was designed to foster community and shared living.

Totems: Silent Storytellers
Totem Bight State Park is renowned for its collection of restored and re-carved totems, skillfully created by Tlingit and Haida artists of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Each totem pole tells a unique story, passed down through generations. As I strolled through the park, I felt like I was walking through a living history book. The totems, standing tall and proud, are truly silent storytellers that convey the rich cultural heritage of Alaska’s indigenous peoples.

A Walk Through the Rainforest
The park is nestled in a dense temperate rainforest, featuring a variety of trees such as western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and Alaska yellow cedar. Walking through the rainforest, I was captivated by the lush greenery and the serene atmosphere. The forest is not only beautiful but also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including bald eagles, and the surrounding areas are habitats for brown bears, black bears, wolves, Sitka black-tailed deer, humpback whales, orcas, salmon, and harlequin ducks. It’s an incredibly rich and stable habitat, teeming with life.

A Peek into the Past
The history of Totem Bight State Park is as fascinating as its totems. In the early 1900s, many of Alaska’s indigenous peoples left their villages to seek work, leaving behind their totem poles which were soon overgrown by forests and eroded by weather. In 1938, the U.S. Forest Service began a program to salvage these large cedar monuments, hiring skilled Tlingit and Haida carvers to restore or replicate them. By World War II, the Clan House was complete, and 15 poles had been restored. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and has since been under the management of the State Department of Natural Resources for continuing historic preservation.
Facilities and Getting There
Totem Bight State Historical Park offers visitor facilities including interpretive displays, a bookshop, and a viewing deck overlooking the Tongass Narrows. While there is no camping at the park, the facilities are well-maintained and informative. Getting to the park is easy—it’s just a ten-mile drive northwest of Ketchikan along North Tongass Highway. The Blue Line city bus also connects downtown Ketchikan to Totem Bight State Historical Park.
Final Thoughts
Visiting Totem Bight State Park was a mesmerizing experience that beautifully combined art, history, and nature. Walking through the park, surrounded by towering totems and the lush rainforest, I felt a deep connection to Alaska’s cultural heritage and natural beauty. Whether you’re an art lover, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to explore new places, Totem Bight State Park is a must-visit.
